Hello guys! I know it's been a while since I made a blog post. Anyway, as you all know, we are to celebrate another nutrition month this coming July 2018. To those of you who are keeping tabs on the talking points and theme in hopes of winning various contests, read on.

Nutrition month 2018 logo. Source: National Nutrition Council

The theme for this year's nutrition month celebration is "Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na nutrisyon aanihin."

This means that for this year, we have to focus on agriculture, crops, fruits, vegetables, and green things in our posters. It's also nice to include farmers and families who are planting together in order to provide the community with nutritious foods.

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy yet of this year's talking points. Before I draw a poster, I see to it that I have read the talking points released by the NNC to further understand what the theme really means.

For more information and updates on the talking points, please visit the official website and Facebook page of the National Nutrition Council (NNC).

I hope I can create a new poster to share with you guys. In the meantime, you can check out my previous posters, and see if they can give you some ideas, by clicking the images below:

Buwan ng Wika 2017 Theme

The theme for this year's celebration of the Buwan ng Wika is "Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago." I think it means that the Filipino language is a language that could evoke or produce change or innovation, which could be interpreted in various positive ways. Sorry. I'm no better in Filipino than I am in English. The abovementioned documents could guide us in interpreting this year's theme in various forms.

I will be posting my own interpretation of this theme in the form of a poster soon. In the meantime you can refer to this article about my poster for the 2015 Buwan ng Wika celebration.

Thank you for reading and I hope you learned something. Feel free to share your suggestions and questions in the comments section below.

Hi guys! So as promised, I made a sample poster for this year's nutrition month celebration. This year's theme is "Healthy Diet: Gawing Habit -- For Life."

Disclaimer: I am in no way an expert in this thing. I just share my knowledge to you guys. Most of them are based on my experience. You are free to use my poster as an inspiration or basis for your own.

I  made this poster based on my own interpretation of the theme itself. I haven't read the talking points given by the National Nutrition Council prior to making this poster because it was just posted recently but if you're going to make your poster, it's best if you read the talking points because from there, you will get a clearer idea on what the theme is really about.

NNC Talking Points

Well, like I said I haven't read the talking points. I've checked the Internet several times but it wasn't available yet. I must've missed it when they posted it. My bad. That's why my poster lacks the details that are specified in the objectives (Source: Nutrition month 2017 talking points):

The campaign aims to increase awareness on the importance of healthy diets which protects against both under- and overnutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases and certain types of cancer. Specifically, this year’s campaign aims to:

1. increase awareness on the importance of healthy diets to prevent malnutrition and contribute to the reduction of overweight and obesity and non-communicable diseases,
2. help the public distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods for better food choices;
3. encourage the food industry including farmers, manufacturers, distributors and food establishments to produce and make available healthier food options; and
4. advocate for the enactment of national and local legislation/policies supportive of an enabling environment for healthy diets.

Like I always emphasize, it's important to read the talking points in order not to miss these important factors. Likewise, the five keys to a healthy diet by the WHO were also given emphasis in the talking points. These are as follows:

1. Breastfeeding babies and young children
2. Eat a variety of foods
3. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits
4. Eat moderate amounts of fats and oils
5. Eat less salts and sugars

I guess, by luck, I have satisfactorily illustrated those five keys in my poster.

Materials Used

These are the materials that I have used when I made this poster:

Disclaimer: I am in no way connected or affiliated to any of the brands I have used. This will be an honest review on why I have chosen to use them.
  • Pilot marker (fine) - The quality isn't that bad and besides, I've been used to using this. It isn't the best for tracing because it kinda has a huge tip but it still did its job.
  • Mongol 2 pencil - For sketching. Any pencil will do as long as it's not that dark. Don't make the tip too sharp so that you don't shred the paper and leave a dented mark.
  • Faber castell eraser - I love this eraser! The lead comes off completely and doesn't stick in the eraser so the paper is clean after erasing the sketch.

Materials I used for the 2017 nutrition month sample poster.

  • Sakura cray-pas - More costly than Golden oil pastels but the quality is great. Colors are vibrant and blends incredibly well because its softness is just right. Price was around 160 PHP. I wanted to buy the 8 or 12 colors one but they're out of stock so I had no choice
  • Cattleya Sketch pad (size 10.5" x 15") - I bought it because it's cheaper for 50 pages. The price was 178.50 PHP in National Bookstore. Also, the paper quality is just right for me. The surface of the paper was kinda rough just the way I like it. Why, you ask? Because I learned through experience that paper with rough surface holds the oil pastel/craypass well. When I blend using my fingers, the color doesn't come off completely. In smooth surface, the color almost completely comes off and it's irritating. I didn't use a sketchpad in my previous posters but now I decided that I needed one for easier compilation. Besides, less clutter.

Keywords and Rough Draft

STEP 1. I always begin my poster by writing the theme in a piece of paper and picking out the important key words. After which, I write symbols and drawings that will represent these keywords.

The theme goes Healthy Diet: Gawing Habit -- For Life. These are the keywords I have picked from the theme and the symbols and drawings that may represent them:

Healthy diet - nutritious foods
Health - caduceus, stethoscope, heart, healthy people
Habit - calendar, clock
For life - tree of life, cycle of life, cycle in arrows, people in different age groups, life cycle
STEP 2. This includes a rough draft of the elements (the symbols and drawings). I will arrange them in an order that will give them a connection to each other; in a way that they will be able to tell the story of the poster (that is the theme itself). I will do versions of this, as many as I can, playing with the different representations or elements.

STEP 3. I choose which of the rough drafts I'm going to use for the poster. Start the sketching, then trace with a marker.

Make the sketch light so that it's easy to erase and make revision as need arises.

Note: Some competitions have specific guidelines. Some only allow 3 colors plus black, with blending allowed. Others don't even allow blending. Some allow marker, some don't. In order to prevent disqualification, please consult the guidelines first. You can ask your teacher or the cultural coordinator of your school for a copy. Take note that they vary from school to school or from competition to competition.

Work in Progress

So here are the shots of my poster as I progressed. Sorry for the  bad photo quality. Some of them were taken at night time so they aren't that clear.

When I color using cray-pas or oil pastels, I start with the light colors first, then going to darker ones. This is to make the poster cleaner. Also, it saves time because you get to cover multiple elements and drawings without changing colors. After which, I use black to add shadows (as seen in the 7th WIP photo).

Here's a closer look at the shadows I'm talking about:

It's up to you if you wanna use black to give shadows to your elements. It's okay if you don't wanna add shadows. It takes practice before you can do it without making your poster look messy. Don't overdo it. Black tends to make the poster dull if there's too much shadow.

The last step is for the finishing touches. Adding highlights here, shadows there, fixing a rather lighter shade of green to make it pop, cleaning the smudges, etc.

Poster Interpretation

So what does my poster mean?

As you can see, there is a tree of life in the center of the poster. It represents the for life keyword.

In each space in between the tree trunks you can see the life of a person, from within the womb, to being a baby (breastfeeding), to being a child, an adult, and until she already has a family of her own. All the while she was eating healthy foods, making it a habit in her entire life.

If we go back to the WHO five keys to a healthy diet, I incidentally 😆 added them to the poster.

🗹 Breastfeeding babies and young children
🗹 Eat a variety of foods
🗹 Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits
🗹 Eat moderate amounts of fats and oils
🗹 Eat less salts and sugars
The clock hands in the middle of the tree of life is just there to emphasize that the tree is about life or time or habit for some who doesn't know the tree of life symbol. The spoon and fork? Well, food! At the top, there's caduceus and a heart for health.

That's pretty much it. I only give myself 5/10 for the finished product. It didn't turn out as I expected.

How to Download

I have disabled right click in my blog so you cannot save my work using "right click" and "save as." If you want to download or save my work in your own computer or phone, click the banner below.

Comments? Suggestions?

I tried to be as detailed as I can. While typing this, I could feel that my fingers are still sore from rubbing and blending the colors yesterday. 😄

You guys can use this poster as reference in making your very own. Feel free to modify and add and/or eliminate elements to make yours even better than this.

Anyway, thank you for reading and I hope you learned something. Feel free to share your suggestions and questions in the comments section below.

 Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa 2015.

Hi guys! It's August and in this month we celebrate our national language. The theme for this year's (2016) Buwan ng Wika celebration is Filipino: Wika ng Karunungan.

So since it's already Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, I decided to continue my long overdue poster for the 2015 Buwan ng Wika.

I have already finished tracing my poster with a marker last August 2015! And a year after, I decided that it's time to finish it and share it with you guys.

Download Here

Be sure that you have already read the Download Instructions before clicking the download icon below. Once done, you're good to go!

I haven't had the time to create a poster for the Nutrition Month 2016. Also, I can't promise that I will be able to make a poster for the 2016 Buwan ng Wika because I'm super busy right now. The things I need to do are multiplying even as I finish them one by one. Work to do keeps on piling up.

Here are the materials that I used:

  • Pentel oil pastels
  • Pilot marker, black, fine
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • 1/4 white cartolina (slightly rough to touch)

The theme for the 2015 Buwan ng Wika is "Filipino: Wika ng Pambansang Kaunlaran." Like what I always do before I begin drawing my poster, I get the keywords from the theme. So the keywords that I get are:

Filipino (language)
Pambansa (Philippines)
Kaunlaran (Progress)

Then, I decide what symbols I'm going to use and how I'm going to combine those symbols for each keyword to create the story of the poster, so that when people look at it, they can decode what it means. The elements must look connected to each other. That's important.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert. I'm just sharing how I do things and what I think is the good way to make a poster. You can disagree with me and I'll be fine with it. Just be civilized about it. :)

  • Filipino (language) symbols: Lakay (quill), books and parchment, ink, Laurel wreath.
  • Pambansa (Philippines) symbols: Philippine flag, salakot of Juan dela Cruz,
  • Kaunlaran symbols: I decided to portray all industries present in the Philippines. We are mostly agricultural so there should be fields and crops. We are an archipelago so there should be waters and fishes. I believe that progress must be felt in all sectors in order to make the kaunlaran a pambansa one. Also, torch, professionals, infrastructures/jobs, and good health care system.

WIP (Work in Progress)

As you can see, from the books, parchments and ink sprang all those elements I have for Kaunlaran or progress -- enclosed by two other elements. On the right are the elements for Filipino/Wika: Lakay, Laurel wreath, road that is connected to a hand bearing a blazing torch. On the left are the elements for Pambansa (Philippines): Philippine flag and salakot. The professionals/Filipinos may also represent the Pambansa.

I'm yet to upload the finished product. Stay tuned! :)

Hi guys! I'm finally done making a poster for this year's Nutrition Month Celebration. The Nutrition Month in the Philippines is being celebrated annually every July. You can refer to my previous Nutrition Month poster entry here. I also made one for the 2014 Nutrition Month and you can check it out here.

The theme for the 2015 Nutrition Month Celebration is:
Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo
You guys can use this poster for reference purpose only. It's up to you if you copy all of it; I don't really mind. However, I guess adding your own personal touch is a better option. You can also improve it if you want. It's up to you. I know you have lots of better ideas. :)

So this is the draft that I've chosen for my poster.

In drafting, what I usually do is I jot down the theme on a clean sheet of bond paper. Then I would fold that paper into four equal parts. I would draw my ideas on the first part and if I find it lacking in detail, I would make another one on the second part.

I would keep on improving the draft of my poster until I get satisfied with the placement of the details and elements. Also, through this method, I can readily refer to my previous drafts and compare my progress.

Why a bond paper? Because it's smaller so I won't get tired easily. Besides, it's just the draft. I just need to get my ideas out and sort the elements as I desire.

After deciding which draft to use, I will proceed to making the real poster. I start it out by sketching with a pencil and tracing with a marker.

Note: Some poster making competitions have guidelines like you cannot use a marker or a pencil and you're only allowed to use three colors of your choice plus black. So before making your poster, make sure that you have checked the guidelines so that you won't get disqualified.

I know this looks messy.

So here is the finished version of my poster.

What's the theme again? Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo. So I have taken note of the following keywords:

  • Timbang (weight)
  • Tamang Nutrisyon (proper nutrition)
  • Ehersisyo (exercise)

So since I already knew the keywords that needed to appear in my poster, I just had to think of symbols or images that can represent those keywords. That's how I came up with the finished output.

In this particular part, you will notice a division, like there's two sides of the boy. On one side, he could be seen eating healthy foods while on the other side, he could be seen doing some exercise.

When these two elements are combined, it could result to a normal Body Mass Index (BMI).

So what is BMI? BMI is measure of body fat based on height and weight. Formula in getting the BMI is weight (in kilogram) divided by height (in meter) squared.

Body Mass Index formula. Image source: fitgirlpersonaltraining.

For interpretation of the result of your calculation, you can refer to this image by DOST: Body Mass Index  for Filipinos.

So what if the BMI is normal? BMI is simply one measure of health as it relates to body weight and height of the person. Having a normal BMI means that your weight is healthy or normal related to your height. A normal BMI reading indicates that the person is more likely to be healthier than someone who is underweight or overweight. However, there are still other factors that influence the overall health of an individual.

UW stands for underweight, N for normal and OW for overweight. BMI stands for body mass index. This is poster making so use of words must be minimized.

MATERIALS:

  • Black marker
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Oil pastels
  • 1/4 white cartolina (because I was a little lazy to go with the 1 whole). If you're gonna use cartolina, don't pick the one with a very smooth and shiny surface. It's not helpful when you're gonna blend colors. Colors don't attach too well on them.

I hope I've been of help in giving you idea on what to draw during your own 2015 Nutrition Month Poster Making Competition. I'd be more than grateful if you share your own experience or ideas through the comments section below.

If you're trying to grab a copy for reference purposes, I'm sorry to say but right click has been disabled in this blog -- to preserve intellectual property, that is. You can, however, DOWNLOAD this poster through the download buttons below.
